Is September 6 a Public Holiday?

National Defence Day, celebrated in Pakistan on September 6, commemorates the  role of the armed forces in the defence of the country during the 1965 Indo-Pakistani war. The day is an important national event marking the successful defence of Lahore and other strategic sites against the Indian forces. Though the war began in August 1965,  September 6 holds special significance as it was the day when the Indian Army launched a major offensive on the Pakistan border. On National Defence Day, the country honours the armed forces and pays tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives. The day is usually marked by various events such as military parades, displays of military equipment and air shows. Ceremonies are held at military memorials and presidents and prime ministers often address the nation. In addition, television  and radio stations broadcast special programs and documentaries highlighting the bravery and sacrifice of the military. The day  not only celebrates the military  but also promotes patriotism and unity among the Pakistani people. September 6 is not an official national holiday in Pakistan. The day is National Defence Day, which celebrates the country's military achievements during the 1965 war, but the Federal Cabinet  has not included it in the list of national holidays for 2024. However, there was also speculation that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif might declare the day a public holiday, similar to what happened on May 28, Yum-e-Takbir. From now on, the day will be celebrated but will not have official  holiday status.
