Punjab Experiences a Surge in Pink Eye Cases

Punjab is currently seeing a significant rise in conjunctivitis cases. Over 86,000 cases were reported in September 2024 alone. The outbreak is particularly alarming in areas like Jhang, Multan, Bhakkar and Lahore. Around 900 new cases have been reported across the province in just a single day, with public hospitals struggling to cope with the influx. Health experts have attributed the surge in cases to the monsoon season, which typically creates favorable conditions for the spread of this highly contagious infection. Conjunctivitis usually heals on its own, but it can spread rapidly through direct contact with infected people and contaminated surfaces.  To slow the spread of the infection, health authorities have urged infected people to isolate themselves, use separate bedding and utensils, and wear protective eyewear. Despite the alarming figures, the situation is being closely monitored and the focus is on preventative measures.
