Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has begun a phased process of blocking mobile phone SIMs registered to expired, cancelled or deceased Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs). The measure is part of PTA efforts to improve the security and integrity of mobile networks.
Important Deadlines:
SIMs linked to cancelled or fake CNICs:
These will be cancelled by 16. August 2024 and blocked. Affected users can restore their SIMs by obtaining new CNICs from NADRA and completing biometric authentication.
SIMs linked to CNICs expired before 2017:
The deadline to block these is 2. September 2024. To keep the SIM active, users will need to renew their CNIC and undergo biometric authentication.
SIMs registered to the CNIC of deceased persons:
The last date to block these is 15. October 2024. Family members can transfer ownership by submitting proof of kinship, original death certificate and other required documents. PTA has already sent warning SMS notifications to affected people informing them of the steps they need to take to maintain their SIM services
